Becoming Emotion Connoisseurs

Developing a greater appreciation of our positive emotions

We all experience a range of emotions—good and bad. Today, I want to ponder a question: Can we become emotional connoisseurs? Now, I don't have a definitive answer, but let's explore this idea together.

To start, let's draw a parallel with wine connoisseurship. What does it take to become a wine expert? The first thing is language. Without terms like tannin, complexity, and acidity, could we truly appreciate wine? Could we dissect the experience, notice its components, and remember them? I think not. But when we break wine into parts and label them, paying attention becomes easier. This is the foundation of connoisseurship.

Now, let's apply this to emotions. Reflecting on my own experiences in the hospital, I faced considerable pain. I began to label my pain: Was it stinging or throbbing? What was its intensity? Did it change over time? Was it deep or superficial? Did it feel like healing or was it worsening? By creating my own terminology for pain, I became somewhat of a pain connoisseur, noticing nuances others might overlook.

It's not just me; many people experiencing pain use different terminologies, sometimes even naming their pain as if it were an old friend. Recognizing these patterns can make managing pain easier.

So, can we become connoisseurs of emotions like love and joy? Can we notice the nuances in how we love others or experience excitement? I believe we can. The first step is breaking these emotions into components and giving them names. Instead of just calling it love or joy, identify what makes up these feelings. Is this love composed of comfort and excitement? What's happening in your body?

Rituals also play a crucial role. With wine, rituals help us focus—raising the glass, observing its color—all these actions make us pay closer attention. While focusing on pain might not be desirable, focusing on positive emotions could enhance our experiences.

When you feel love or joy, maybe pause and create a ritual to fully engage with those emotions. Pay attention to the details instead of letting them pass unnoticed. By developing a language for positive emotions and establishing rituals to savor them, we might amplify their impact.

In summary, by creating language and rituals for love, excitement, and joy, we can enrich our emotional experiences. These positive feelings are already good but imagine if they could be even better. Here's to becoming connoisseurs of our own emotions.
